{"ops":[{"attributes":{"underline":true,"bold":true},"insert":"Event Report 8/8/21"},{"insert":"\n\nI and my buddies last second decided to head over to Springfield Toy Con 2021 and play in a local 1k they were having there on 8/7/21.\n\nI chose Modern Goblins since I can't play it in Legacy anywhere.\n\nI went with the above build, which is basicallyJokerswild's deck on MTGO with 3 cards changed around. I ran 2 Relics over a Chalice and a Leyline in the board because every time I don't have Relic I die to some Jund die-hard with their goyves. I also maindecked the originally SB Cratermaker over a Skirk Prospector because I was worried about Hammertime. I also just wanted Blood Moon for a lot of situations (Urza's Saga) so I cut the 4th Thoughtseize and jammed in the two Blood Moons with the extra space I made by shaving Crater from the board. Snooping people to death isn't my preference (block controlling till the inevitable takedown is my preference), but with Wasteland and Port not being legal I have to speed up. That said the deck gets to play False Tempo similar to how Twin did. Also the format doesn't seem well set up to handle several garbage bodies + removal for threats.\n\nHow to Snoop Combo:\nHave Snoop in play without Summoning Sickness (Haste, or just live for a turn)."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Put Boggart Harbinger into play and put Kiki-Jiki on top of your library. I went through a lot of possible iterations before settling on his build. 4 MWM keeps Ragavan at bay and fuels Munitions Experts for Dragon Rage Channeler / "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar"}},{"insert":" or even Murktide. I was particularly worried about early Murktide Reagents and Crashing Rhino's, but I couldn't think of any configuration that hit the decks I wanted to hit while still handling those decks better. Leyline solved one and Chalice the other, but both were... powerfully niche. \n\nAnother note here, I really thought the lack of Haste lords would matter, but the more I thought about it the more I realized the threat of removal is more important than the lost tempo that happens when you play a soon to be dead haste lord. Just jam and make them have removal. The cards are all playable, so it's not like you are casting bad cards (on the assumption synergy kicks in). \n\nI haven't played Competitive MTG since like 2016-17, and definitely only practiced a few games against some friends Enchantress and another's Jund deck for the sole purpose of shaking rust off. All of my actual game preparation came from mental theory crafting and bouncing ideas off of teammates.\n\n\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**R1 Jordan on UR Murktide 0-2**"},{"insert":"\n\nG1 Jordan was on the play, and his hand was quite good and T1 Fetch Dragon's Rage Channeler and Bauble into T2 Serum Visions. to my land and pass. T2 He Serum Visioned and left a mana up attacking for a Delerious 3/3. I dropped a Snoop (as I had harbinger in hand) and he bolted it. Then on T3 He cast a 6/6 Murktide and that really was all there was to it. Excellent hand and the exact reason the deck is so good. I messed up and earned a warning to a game rule violation for revealing a card to Snoop directly after drawing despite snoop dying on the previous turn.\n\nG2 See G1, but he had an Abrade for my T2 Chalice and Murktide was a turn slower at 6/6 in size.\n\nHe punked me 2-0 and showed off why UR Murktide is the deck to beat. I misboarded as well and really should have Brought in Leylines instead of Chalice, or even in addition to. Leyline is the better card in the match-up though as none of their threats work without their yard and all of my 1/1s for Ragavan (which he correclty boarded out). \n\nOverall Record: 0-1\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**R2 Andrew on UB Food 2-0**"},{"insert":"\n\nG1 I was on the play and just played a bunch of 1/1s and Munitions Experts until I won with Sling Gang burst damage through his food. \n\nThis match-up isn't that hard for my deck. They have a rough time handling consistent removal (thanks to Matron and Harbinger), and I can just control with ME and Ringleaders until I beat them to death. The match usually comes down to pressuring their food faster than they can eat it, which Sling-Gang lets me do suddenly. I did exactly that, but Andrew dug about 16-20 cards without seeing Asmor, and that's a bummer. \n\nG2 I slogged again until my 1/1 army won with Sling Pump post damage through eating 2 Food with a Leyline shutting down any relevant activity he could think of. \n\nOverall Record: 1-1\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**R3 Don on UB Mill**"},{"insert":"\n\nG1 I was on the play, and this match up immediately became a long slog where I just get several 1/1s in play and wait for Munitions Experts to make it into my hand to kill the Crabs. I won with burst damage from Sling-Gang. \n\nG2 I boarded in Gaea's Blessing and the game went long again. Thanks to the SB Gaea's Blessing though the game dragged. At one point I drew Gaea's Blessing and cast it. I targeted 2 Surgicals and a Crab in his yard to stop his Lurris from mattering and shuffled my graveyard when Blessing hit it. Some of you may have noticed that's all entirely wrong, and not how Gaea's Blessing works or Lurris works. So to show off my inexperience in the format AND the inability to read cards I got a second game rule violation error because Gaea's Blessing only shuffles the entire graveyard if it was put into your graveyard from library. I thought it had the same line of Text as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Emrakul, the Aeons Torn"}},{"insert":" or the other original Eldrazi. Instead of spending 15 minutes rewinding (as the judge ruled we should do) and holding up the tournament I decided to just concede this game to my opponent. I was here to play the first competitive Magic I have played in a long time. I don't want to hold up the whole event so I could grind out an unfun match-up. Also to touch on what I shuffled back from my opponent's yard: I was of the impression that Lurris was absolutely bat shit insane. It merely is most of that, and can't buy back instants and sorceries. So doubly as embarrassing, and definitely something I once knew, forgot, and in my hubris didn't double check. \n\nG3 And early kill spell and Surgical got rid of Snoop, but Gaea's Blessing was in the bottom ten cards of my deck. That was plenty of time to set up and kill all of his crabs and swing in with Sling finishing it. \n\nOverall Record: 2-1\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**R4 Daniel on Hammertime 2-0**"},{"insert":"\n\nG1 Daniel took the play with a blistering start that resembles Affinity of old with several bodies and a Springleaf Drum along with Urza's Saga. I jammed an Aether Vial. He didn't actualy have any power in play though due it being ornithopters and just waited for his saga. I vialed in an Ignoble and cast some irrelevant creature on my turn. He then got a hammer and a shadowspear onto his thopter and everything hurt. However I Snoop Combo'd next turn. \n\nG2 I boarded in Chalice and Blood Moon and a T2 Blood Moon off of Mountain, Swamp, Skirk Prospector destroyed his Urza's Saga and left him anemic with just some small bodies. I just beat him to death in this game.\n\nMy notes are the most incomplete on this match, so a lot may be wrong other than the big beats. \n\nOverall Record: 3-1\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**R5 A different Daniel on UR Murktide (Delver instead of Ragavan) 2-1**"},{"insert":"\n\nG1 Daniel played a typical game without a T1 creature. He eventually dropped a big Murktide and beat me down to 6. I misplayed (because I drew my out and was excited) and main phased my combo with my Aether Vial despite Snoop having summoning sickness. In the usual vein of never being punished (as he had already spent his kill spells on older snoops) I got to untap and combo off in my upkeep despite his Serum Visions digging to punish my mistake. I *really* need to tighten up my play.\n\nI boarded in 3 Chalice and 3 Leyline cutting 3 Ringleader, 2 Boggart Harbinger, and 1 Skirk Prospector. The card draw doesn't matter, the Combo is too easy to interact with, and his deck doesn't work at all if I have the other cards active and can with with whatever I draw.\n\nG2 we had a longer game where Chalice of the Void shut off most of his actions. He eventually drew "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Prismari Command"}},{"insert":" to stop my anemic reign of drawing hot shit. Consider this foreshadowing. \n\nI knew he was on nearly Mono Red aggro / burn / stuff but not exactly what. I also know that Burn type stuff is not great for Goblins, especially if I'm not running "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Collective Brutality"}},{"insert":" in the board, which I am not. Goblins can handle creatures though so I knew that I was to keep a hand with Mogg War Marshal for as many chumps as I could find, and ideally an accelerant. To boot Christoph was on the play due to his 3rd place seeding (to my 5th). \n\nG1 He completely ran me over as I mulled to 4 trying to find a gameplan. His hand was nearly perfect though with T1 Dragon Rage Channeler, T2 Bauble, Manamorphose, Manamorphose, Swiftspear, Gut Shot, Lava Dart, Flash Back Lava Dart. So I was gonna die whether I wanted to or not. \n\nG2 I boarded in 3 Chalice over 3 Ringleader and started us off with an early Chalice. The game went longer after this point (good!) and a Kor Firewalker appeared, but I eventually won with Snoop Combo. There was one of those shitty moments where I forgot a Chalice Trigger and we informed a judge of such. But I played way tighter after that.\n\nG3 my T2 Chalice ate a Wear // Tear, and we had a laugh about how I sealed my own fate. Then I very promptly died within 2 turns to a lot of 1 cost cards. \n\n\nOverall Record: 4-2-1 and 6th Place\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"**Conclusions**"},{"insert":"\n\nMy teammates went 3-3 on Bogles, 3-3 on Merfolk, and 1-3 drop on Enchantress.\n\nI won 50 bucks for my 30 dollar entry and had a blast. It feels great to play Magic again. However I played like shit, got really lucky, and the format can't beat Leyline of the Void. I miss Legacy, but at least I got to play.\n\nI'm happy I didn't play against Crashing Rhino's, as I don't *think* the match-up is very good, and only first play tested it with my R1 opponent Jordan for funsies after our match. It was in fact, not a good match-up. Food was actually on an axis I can interact with, and Murktide really can't win without it's graveyard. \n\nThe two Relic's I put in my SB were garbage all day, and I'm not convinced a single Goyf was even registered to the event. They should have been the 4th Leyline, and I should fit 2-3 Collective Brutality into my SB for nearly Mono Red stuff.dec.\n\nAlso I should play better, and not be out of practice, and pay more attention, and slow down. I won mostly on the back of luck, Legacy experience, and Leyline of the Void. \n\n\n\n\n"}]}
