Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"\tThis deck wins by creating as many tokens as possible and burning out our opponents with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Purphoros, God of the Forge"}},{"insert":". The deck is essentially a mono red goblins deck, where "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko, Mob Boss"}},{"insert":" could be considered the secret commander. Managing to stick him and doubling our Goblins will usually end a game if Purphoros is on the field. \n\n\tThe game plan is incredibly straightforward; we ramp with mana rocks on early turns if possible, maybe play a looting effect to curate our hand to be ready with a token spell/engine when Purphoros comes down, or play an early piece like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Impact Tremors"}},{"insert":" (to increase our burn) or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Warchief"}},{"insert":" (to make our goblins cheaper to cast). Then we drop Purphoros as soon as we are able. Now the game plan is to have as many creatures enter the battlefield as possible and as quickly as possible. The deck makes itself a target immediately due to being able to burn all our opponents at once (no politicking to be had with this deck--you are everybody's enemy from T1) and struggles with removal and draw, so plan to move quickly and, sometimes, greedily. The main component of the deck are cards that make multiple creatures. Since mono red struggles with gaining card advantage we want as many cards that can make multiple creatures as possible, so each card is doing extra work. The other goblins in the deck are there for important support and combos, which I will break down below. \n\n\tOk, let's break down some of the categories in the deck. \n\n\tRamp, Removal, and Draw are all pretty self-explanatory in this deck. This is the \"necessary trifecta\" and we need all three just like any other deck does. \n\nToken Makers:\n\tCards like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko's Command"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon Fodder"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hordeling Outburst"}},{"insert":" are the bread and butter of this deck. My personal favorite is "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Inquisitive Puppet"}},{"insert":"; while it's not a Goblin, two bodies for 1 mana is just too good to pass up. Mathematically that might be 4 damage per 3 opponents for a total of 12 direct damage at the low price of 1 mana. Now that is value! Any spell or creature that makes more than one body is huge; we want as many cards in the deck that make more than body as possible since we are not guaranteed to see that many cards with our poor draw; goblin tokens, obviously, are preferred since we would like to find "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko, Mob Boss"}},{"insert":" to double them. \n\nNotable Goblins and Combos (win conditions): \n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko, Mob Boss"}},{"insert":" is the most notable goblin in the deck, but the best goblins are technically "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Matron"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Recruiter"}},{"insert":". I will almost always fetch Goblin Recruiter with Matron or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imperial Recruiter"}},{"insert":" in order to set up a combo finish by stacking goblins on the top of the deck in a specific order. The order that is most optimal is as follows: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Conspicuous Snoop"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skirk Prospector"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Warchief"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko, Mob Boss"}},{"insert":" , from top to bottom. Now, assuming you have enough other goblins out, once the Snoop is on the battlefield you can play the Prospector off the top (and you can even use his ability via the Snoop if you have creatures but no mana!), then sac goblins to make enough mana to cast the Warchief if necessary. Now you have haste, and the Snoop can activate Krenko's ability! Do this, then sac goblins to play Krenko himself and then activate his ability as well. This should absolutely make enough tokens to kill the table with Purphoros triggers. Of course, sacrifice as few goblins as possible to the Prospector so that Krenko makes as many tokens as possible, and you can also weave other goblins into the Recruiter stack (such as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Instigator"}},{"insert":") if you are going to need more bodies and you have the mana to cast them. Note that if you have haste on the battlefield or can make use of Krenko immediately then feel free to just tutor him and go to work, but this combo line is fairly reliable barring interruption. It's also important to note that if all you need is mana and the board state is right then go for a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dockside Extortionist"}},{"insert":" (budget permitting)! Lucky for us he is a Goblin. He can also be inserted into the Recruiter combo line below the Prospector and almost certainly be mana positive while putting another goblin on the board for Krenko's activated ability to see. Note that "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Chirurgeon"}},{"insert":" is excellent to protect any of our important creatures, Purphoros included if he is a creature. \n\nDamage Increasers:\n\tIncreasing Purphoros's damage is also viable option if we cannot set up a goblin combo and we are relying on run of the mill "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Krenko's Command"}},{"insert":" type cards. While I used to run "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fiery Emancipation"}},{"insert":" due to the enticing word \"triples\", that card is decidedly bad in this deck because it costs 6 mana and does nothing the turn it comes down. The deck does not often make a lot of mana, or take part in games that last all that many turns, so spending 6 mana on a play that cannot win the game is not a winning strategy. I would much rather spend that mana on a combination of the cards in the \"Token Makers\" category that are actually lowering our opponents life totals. So, instead this category is dedicated to cards that either mimic Purphoros (like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Impact Tremors"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Witty Roastmaster"}},{"insert":") and cards that increase the damage from Purphoros (like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Torbran, Thane of Red Fell"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mechanized Warfare"}},{"insert":"). \n\nSacrifice Outlets:\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ashnod's Altar"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Phyrexian Altar"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skirk Prospector"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skullclamp"}},{"insert":" each give us useful ways to sacrifice our (hopefully plentiful) Goblin tokens. The importance of draw can never be understated, and Skullclamp is the best in the deck (followed by "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Idol of Oblivion"}},{"insert":"). Since we don't care about these tokens once they hit the field usually, both Altars provide an excellent way to recycle our Goblins to make more Goblins. As a Legacy mono red Goblin player back in the day, the original "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Piledriver"}},{"insert":" flavor text comes to mind: "},{"attributes":{"color":"#16161d","italic":true},"insert":"Throw enough goblins at any problem and it should go away."},{"insert":"\n "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Important note"},{"insert":": Sac outlets can also be used to sac creatures with mana values in order to lower our devotion to red and fizzle a creature removal spell targeted at Purphoros. It's a lot of mana for a do-nothing effect on cast, but it can pay off quickly.\n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Warrior's Oath"}},{"insert":": I love this card in the deck, it feels very on brand. If you can see a way to deal the damage to the table I love the idea of going for it if you just need one more turn. Even if the win is thwarted it's fun to go down by killing yourself. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Grinning Ignus"}},{"insert":": This card is great! On the turn after you play it you can get it to reenter the field the same number of times as you have mana, which is solid value. And, with a few Goblin tokens and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skirk Prospector"}},{"insert":" you can do it quite a few times and that combination of cards can certainly close out a game. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chandra's Incinerator"}},{"insert":": This card is nuts. Not only does it turn every Purphoros trigger into 6 direct creature damage (assuming you have 3 opponents), it can also be cast for 1 red mana often (all you need is one other creature to enter before it, again assuming you have 3 opponents). This card is a menace if you can get a few Purphoros triggers off as it can easily dismantle opposing board states. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mogg Infestation"}},{"insert":": I'm very proud of finding this card for the deck. It can be a boardwipe against an opponent who is a more serious problem, or it can just win the game if you target yourself while you have Purphoros out and enough creatures. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Norin the Wary"}},{"insert":": This card is just plain fun. You get a free Purphoros trigger per turn, which will stack up throughout the course of a few turns, all for the low cost of 1 mana. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Emrakul's Hatcher"}},{"insert":": This is worth noting since it's very similar to "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Siege-Gang Commander"}},{"insert":", however since it can immediately make back some mana it allows for more explosive plays. \n\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Indulge // Excess"}},{"insert":": This card is mostly here for the Indulge half; it is an excellent win con if you swing with all your creatures after casting this. The Excess half has it's place as well, and in a pinch this card be discarded to a looting effect and the Excess half can be big ramp in a later turn. We often have plenty of tokens sitting around that we aren't particularly attached to, so attacking with them in order to ramp is a very viable option, perhaps even in the same turn that you cast the Indulge half. \n\n\n\tThis deck is straight forward and powerful. Purphoros dodges a lot of removal, and often can be a non-creature in this build since I focused on tokens that don't have mana values. The draw is weak, ramp and interaction is mid at best, but the raw power is certainly there. It could probably use several key upgrades, such as Birgi, God of Storytelling and more draw options; however, I have disassembled the physical deck and it won't be seeing any other updates (note that it was last updated when I added Mechanized Warfare from Brother's War at the end of 2022). Still, I hope that my deck list and primer can provide a base to work from and give some inspiration! As always, please leave any questions or suggestions in the comment section. Cheers\n"}]}
